Britney’s Gongs
The world of child actresses, singers, dancers and performers is a troubled one. The price of success at such an early age would appear to take its toll later on in life, but perhaps not much later than you might imagine. Consider the case of Lindsay Lohan, who started her career in commercials at the age of 3. She then went on, still at an early age, to work as a fashion model and then on to acting and even music. One might consider this a great boost in life and a great head start, but we all know where she ended up (at least temporarily) : fighting an addiction to alcohol at the tender age of 20. We can add countless others to this list such as Brooke Shields and Drew Barrymore. Perhaps the best known, and best loved, case of them all is dear Britney Spears. How we all loved her and then we ditched her as her life spiralled out of control following a messy divorce and custody battle for her two children and even a hit and run incident and driving without a license. Like Lohan, she started early in life as a performer (mainly a singer) but as fame, money and universal recognition increased, she appeared unable to take control of her life. However, many of us do not know how to take control of our lives, but unlike Spears and Lohan, we do not wake up to see our mistakes in detail in the headlines of the morning papers. This is a kind of pressure that we, the everyday man and woman on the street, cannot understand. Happily for Spears, things appear to be turning around. At the 2008 MTV awards, she was awarded three gongs. The year before, she shocked the audience and the world with a robot-like performance of Gimme More. But this year things were different and she received a standing ovation from the audience and won praise and support from her peers and celebrity friends. Is this the turning point in the life of a child celebrity? Is this a predefined cycle : success early in life followed by a life spiraling out of control only to get it together once more to do it all again ? Many observers are asking the question : how long can Spears last this time? Have we heard the last gong?
